Wheel Bearing Inspection Overview
The extent of wheel bearing axial play must be inspected periodically. Simple checks (rather
than precise measurements) are usually performed. If any wheel bearing seems abnormal,
a precise measurement is taken using a dial gauge in accordance with the procedure shown
in shop manual.
Simple Check for Wheel Bearing
- Raise the vehicle.
- Check for excessive axial looseness in each wheel bearing by grasping each wheel at the top and bottom and attempting to pull and push the wheel in the axial direction.
NOTE:
Attempt to pull and push each wheel in the axial direction, not at an angle relative to the axle.
Only a tiny amount of wheel bearing end play is permissible. The service limit is typically 0
to 0.05 mm. If you feel any axial wheel movement, take a precise measurement using a dial
gauge in accordance with the procedure shown in shop manual.
Precise Measurement of Wheel Bearing Axial Play
If a simple check reveals excessive axial looseness in any wheel bearing, take a precise measurement using a dial gauge.
Refer to shop manual for details of the measurement procedure.
NOTE:
- Before taking any measurement, clean the surface to which the dial gauge will be applied. Take the opportunity to check for leakage of wheel bearing grease.
- The dial gauge application surfaces are different on the front and rear wheels.
