1. Lane Departure Warning System Introduction
Lane Departure Warning System Overview
Welcome to Lane Departure Warning System.
The Lane Departure Warning System is a camera-based system that detects unintentional departures from the vehicle’s lane.
The Lane Departure Warning System uses the camera images to observe the vehicle’s travel lane.
It identifies lane markings and issues an audible warning, and visual warnings in the instrument panel and MID, if the LDW system determines the vehicle is unintentionally leaving the lane in which it is travelling.
Lane Departure Warning System Objective
In this article, you will learn about the Lane Departure Warning System, including the
- LDW system components
- LDW system operation
- LDW service considerations
At the end of this module, you will take a test to evaluate what you’ve learned.
2. Lane Departure Warning System Components
Front Camera Module
This system includes the following components:
Front Camera Module. The FCM (Front Camera Module) mounts behind the rear view mirror on the windshield.

Gauge Control Module
Gauge Control Module Warning Indicators.
The Gauge Control Module Warning Indicators include a speaker, warning indicator lamp and MID messages.
ON/OFF Switch & Indicator
An ON/OFF Switch and Indicator.
The ON/OFF switch is located on the lower portion of the dash.

3. Lane Departure Warning System Operation
Normal 1 of 2
The Front Camera Module uses the camera images to observe the vehicle’s travel lane.
It identifies lane markings and issues an audible warning, and visual warnings in the instrument panel and MID, if the LDW system determines the vehicle is unintentionally departing the lane in which it is travelling.
Lane departure warnings are cleared when the vehicle
Normal 2 of 2
The Front Camera Module looks at signals from the Gauge Control Module and VSA Control Module to determine if the driver is actively controlling the vehicle or not.
Use of the turn signals and brakes indicate the driver is controlling the vehicle, and no warnings would be issued.
System Suspension
The system may not issue lane departure warnings while driving on a sharp curve, or if environmental conditions prevent the camera from clearly identifying lane markings for example, if lane markings are faded or covered by snow or dust.
Camera Blocked
When the camera view becomes blocked for longer than 5 minutes, a warning message is issued instructing the driver to clean the windshield.
Camera Too Hot
If the cabin temperature becomes too hot, the FCM will suspend operation.
Vehicles parked in high ambient temperatures would be more likely to display this warning due to heat soak.
System operation will resume when the cabin temperature drops to an acceptable level.
Failure Notification
The FCM contains internal self diagnostics.
When a failure is detected, the system turns on a warning indicator lamp and a message in the MID.
The system DTCs can be accessed using the Honda Diagnostic System.
Disable/Enable
To disable the system, the LDW ON/OFF button is pressed for a minimum of .5 seconds.
When the system is disabled, the indicator light on the button turns off.
The LDW system turns back on at the next ignition cycle, or when the button is pressed again.
4. Lane Departure Warning System Control
The FCM contains all Lane Departure Warning logic within the article.
Vehicle speed information is received from the PCM.
Headlight and wiper information is received from the Gauge Control Module.
After the FCM processes this information, it then sends signals to the Gauge Control Module to turn on or off warnings.
5. Lane Departure Warning System Service Consideration
Camera
Proper alignment of the Front Camera module is critical for the proper operation of the Lane Departure Warning system.
The camera needs to be aimed any time the windshield or the Front Camera Module is replaced or after the vehicle has had significant collision repairs.
Two different aiming methods can be used:
One is Target Alignment Calibration, the other is Service Point Calibration.
Service Calibration
Target Alignment Calibration is a static alignment using a series of black and white targets to calibrate the Front Camera Module.
Service Point Calibration is a dynamic alignment that requires the vehicle to be driven within certain parameters to be completed.
For specific procedures, refer to the shop manual information.
System Malfuncation
The Lane Departure Warning system sets DTCs when system failures occur.
Some DTCs will cause the LDW warning indicator lamp to turn on with a MID message, and some will not.
In addition, VSA system failures will cause the LDW system to become inoperative.
In these cases, troubleshoot the VSA system before troubleshooting the LDW system.
